Nation Focuses on Long-Term Water Security Amid Drought
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has announced significant advancements in the nation’s efforts to establish a reliable 24-hour water supply for all households. During a National Assembly sitting on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Dr. Drew addressed the ongoing drought conditions and reiterated that achieving consistent water access is a top national priority, integral to the administration’s long-term development vision.
To bolster the Federation’s water infrastructure and enhance its resilience during periods of drought, substantial investments have been made. These initiatives include upgrades to existing facilities, the development of new water supply systems, and improvements to water storage capacity.
Addressing Community Hardships
Prime Minister Drew acknowledged the challenges faced by residents due to the current drought. In response, the government has initiated several key investments and upgrades. “We remain focused on delivering lasting solutions, not temporary fixes, so that every community can benefit from a dependable and sustainable water supply,” Dr. Drew stated. “Our commitment is unwavering, and we will continue pushing forward until reliable, 24-hour water access becomes a reality across St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Infrastructure Upgrades and New Developments
The government’s proactive measures include drilling projects in various communities, infrastructure upgrades, the completion of a desalination plant, and the procurement of new pumps and motors. These actions demonstrate a commitment to expanding water distribution networks and improving the overall consistency of the water system.
Highlighting the success of recent investments, Prime Minister Drew pointed to the Cayon area. A new well installed in 2024 has significantly improved water availability, with over 90 percent of residents now experiencing 24/7 water access, even amidst the drought. “We invested tens of hundreds of thousands of dollars to secure a well in Cayon, and today Cayon is one of those communities where over 90 percent of the members have access to 24/7 water, even under the drought situation,” the Prime Minister reported.
Further enhancing water security, another water infrastructure project is currently underway. A new connection has been established to link water sources to St. Peter’s and surrounding communities, accompanied by the installation of new pumps. Drilling operations are also ongoing in Saddlers and other locations to increase water production and ensure widespread access across the Federation.
Long-Term Water Security
Prime Minister Drew emphasized that these measures are not short-term fixes but are strategically designed for long-term impact. The objective is to guarantee water security for future generations, ensuring a stable and dependable supply for the nation.
