Over twenty energy technicians across the island recently participated in a hands-on workshop focused on the application process for installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems under the national SOLARISE program. The event, held on August 11, 2026, was organized by the St. Kitts Energy Unit with the primary goal of equipping local technicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate the efficient and smooth onboarding of clients for solar energy projects.

Advancing Sustainable Energy Goals

This initiative aligns directly with the broader objective of diversifying the country’s energy consumption by integrating renewable sources, specifically solar energy. It supports the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, and Utilities’ commitment to advancing the national sustainable energy agenda. Officials emphasized that ensuring technicians are well-versed in the application forms is crucial for a streamlined client onboarding experience.

Comprehensive Training for Technicians

The workshop provided technicians with detailed guidance on several key areas:

  • Application Form Completion: Participants received in-depth instruction on how to accurately complete the various application and inspection forms required for the SOLARISE program.
  • Understanding Equipment Specifications: Training focused on assessing the suitability of different solar PV system components, including batteries, modules, and inverters, by teaching technicians how to read and interpret manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Locating Field Entries: Dr. Bertill Browne, Director of the Energy Unit, demonstrated how to locate relevant field entries within equipment specifications, using a projector to highlight important details on the forms.

The interactive nature of the workshop allowed technicians to ask questions and gain clarity on official procedures, including licensing requirements. Discussions also covered the regulations governing their work under the SOLARISE program.

Grid Connectivity and Implementation

A significant aspect of the training involved informing participants about the necessary procedures for engaging with the St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd (SKELEC). Technicians learned about the expectations for coordinating grid connectivity during the testing and implementation phases of their solar PV installations. This collaboration is vital for ensuring that newly installed systems can be safely and effectively integrated into the national electricity grid.

The SOLARISE Program: A Step Towards Energy Independence

The SOLARISE program represents a strategic effort by the government to harness solar energy as a viable and sustainable power source. By investing in training for local technicians, the program aims to build local capacity and expertise, making it easier for homeowners and businesses to adopt solar technology. This not only contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on fossil fuels but also offers potential economic benefits through lower energy costs and the creation of green jobs.

The hands-on guidance provided during the workshop is expected to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of solar PV system installations. Technicians who are confident in navigating the application process and understanding technical specifications are better equipped to serve their clients, ensuring compliance with program requirements and the successful integration of solar energy solutions across the island.

Future Outlook and Program Impact

The successful execution of this workshop signals a proactive approach to implementing renewable energy initiatives. As more technicians become proficient in the SOLARISE program’s requirements, the pace of solar PV adoption is likely to increase. This, in turn, will contribute to St. Kitts and Nevis meeting its renewable energy targets and fostering a more sustainable energy future.

The Energy Unit’s commitment to continuous training and support for energy technicians underscores the importance of a skilled workforce in driving the nation’s sustainable energy transition. The program’s success hinges on the effective collaboration between technicians, the Energy Unit, and SKELEC, ensuring a seamless process from application to grid connection.
