Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew of St. Kitts and Nevis calls on businesses to pass recent tax reductions directly to consumers amid rising global prices.
Key Tax Relief Measures
Dr. Drew announced a package of tax cuts and allowances designed to ease the cost of living. These include reductions in fuel taxes and Customs Service Charges on gasoline. The government also eliminated Value Added Tax (VAT) and duties on alternative energy equipment while excluding shipping surcharges from customs calculations.
These steps aim to lower operational costs for businesses and deliver financial relief to households during challenging international economic conditions.
Appeal for Fair Pricing
During a national address on Tuesday, the Prime Minister emphasized that the measures’ success depends on businesses reflecting the savings in retail prices. He stated that lower costs would enable consumers to purchase more, stimulating economic growth across sectors.
“We ask not for charity but for fairness,” Dr. Drew urged businesses. “When government reduces taxes, let those savings reach the people at the counter.”
This approach promises reduced overheads for companies and broader benefits for the island’s residents.
