St. Kitts and Nevis plans to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Southeast Asia by establishing a new High Commission in Singapore. This move comes shortly after the opening of a High Commission in India in April 2026.
Announcement and Timeline
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Denzil Douglas revealed the development during the May 6, 2026, episode of InFocus. Officials confirm that an agreement with Singapore is in place, paving the way for the facility to open very soon.
Historic Milestone for Caribbean Diplomacy
The initiative marks a significant step for the government under Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew. Dr. Douglas described it as a historic achievement, noting that St. Kitts and Nevis will be the first Caribbean nation to host such a mission in Singapore.
“Singapore is one of the more successful states financially and otherwise, and it is small,” Dr. Douglas stated. He pointed out similarities in geographical size between the two nations and emphasized their mutually respectful relationship, which continues to grow through various cooperative efforts. Singapore has provided support to St. Kitts and Nevis in multiple areas.
Current Representation and Future Plans
Currently, the federation maintains diplomatic ties in Singapore through an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary based there, who facilitates dialogue and advances cooperation. Resident representatives in both Singapore and India are citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.
This expansion aligns with a long-term strategy to bolster the nation’s diplomatic footprint across Asia.
