Federation Launches Ambitious Renewable Energy Roadmap
St. Kitts and Nevis is embarking on a significant initiative to transition its electricity generation to 100 percent renewable sources. This strategic undertaking involves the development of a comprehensive roadmap designed to identify key policies, investment opportunities, and technological advancements crucial for bolstering the nation’s energy sector.
To officially commence this endeavor, a two-day workshop was convened from Wednesday, June 3rd to Thursday, June 4th, 2026, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. The event served as a pivotal gathering for government officials, energy sector experts, and international partners. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions regarding the current state of the energy landscape, collaboratively pinpointing both challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the pursuit of 100 percent renewable electricity generation.
Key Objectives and International Support
The workshop concluded with a consensus on common strategies essential for achieving the federation’s renewable energy goals. This initiative is generously supported by the European Union through its EUROCLIMA CARIBBEAN program. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in collaboration with the Greening The Islands (GTI) Foundation, is overseeing the implementation of this vital program.
Reports indicate that the government’s strategy centers on strengthening the institutional, technical, and strategic foundations of the energy sector. These elements are identified as foundational pillars for the roadmap, designed to guide the federation toward its specific targets.
Environmental and Economic Aspirations
St. Kitts and Nevis is committed to fostering a sustainable, low-carbon energy future. A key objective is to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, aiming for a 61 percent decrease by the year 2030. This commitment underscores the nation’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
Federation officials have outlined that the roadmap development process is projected to span approximately 18 months. This period will involve extensive consultations with public and private stakeholders, thorough technical assessments, and meticulous investment planning.
A Future of Energy Security and Growth
The forthcoming Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap is poised to play a instrumental role in guiding the Federation towards an advanced and sustainable energy future. Beyond its environmental implications, the roadmap is expected to reinforce economic growth, enhance energy security, and promote responsible environmental practices for generations to come.
