Government Initiatives Aim to Ease Financial Burdens
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew recently outlined significant government measures designed to support citizens facing economic challenges, including increased pensions, salary adjustments for public employees, and efforts to mitigate the impact of rising prices. These details emerged during an interview alongside Minister of Public Utilities, Konris Maynard, on the radio program “Issues SKN Progress Report.”
Pension System Enhancements
Addressing financial support for seniors, Prime Minister Drew confirmed that the government has elevated the monthly pension amount from EC$430 to EC$500. This adjustment took effect on January 1, 2024, marking a key initiative to bolster the financial security of pensioners.
Furthermore, a pension amendment bill, passed in April 2025, aims to rectify a long-standing disparity affecting GAE Workers within the public sector. These workers had, for decades, been without guaranteed pensions and gratuity. The new legislation ensures they will now receive gratuity calculated in line with other government employees.
Public Employee Compensation and Cost-of-Living Measures
In addition to pension improvements, the government has implemented an eight percent salary increase for public employees. This same eight percent boost has also been extended to government pensioners, providing broader financial relief.
Dr. Drew also highlighted the “Budget Boost” wallet initiative and reductions in customs duties and other taxes. These measures are intended to help shield the populace from the effects of national inflation. The Prime Minister emphasized the administration’s ongoing commitment to serving the people’s interests.
Addressing Bread Price Concerns
The Prime Minister addressed recent public concerns regarding the rising cost of bread. He reported personally purchasing four loaves from four different bakeries across the island. His findings indicated that most bakeries had maintained the price of standard “dollar breads.”
An exception was noted with bread from “Island Bakery.” Prime Minister Drew stated that he has requested the management of this business to refrain from price increases without prior consultation with the government.
He reasoned that “dollar bread” represents a staple for many residents, underscoring the importance of government consultation for any pricing adjustments contemplated by businesses. The Prime Minister affirmed the government’s openness to dialogue with businesses, maintaining a pro-business stance provided that citizens remain protected from excessive price hikes.
