Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew of St. Kitts and Nevis has provided a personal update on his health, confirming he suffered a stroke and is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Speaking to the nation on September 13, 2026, Dr. Drew expressed gratitude for the public’s prayers and well wishes during his recovery period. He assured citizens that he has been discharged from the hospital and is actively participating in rehabilitation, reporting significant progress.

Prime Minister’s Health Update and Diagnosis

Dr. Drew detailed the medical event, explaining, “This stroke was a dissection of one of the arteries in the back of my brain called the vertebral artery.” He further elaborated that the impact of the stroke on his cognitive functions and physical capabilities has been effectively managed. “Physically, I can move all my limbs, speak well. My mental state, my coordination, my intelligence have been good,” he stated. The Prime Minister revealed that he has been receiving occupational therapy and rehabilitation in Florida, noting that his recovery is progressing favorably, exceeding expectations given the nature of his ailment.

Government Operations Continue Uninterrupted

Beyond his personal health, Dr. Drew emphasized the unwavering functionality of the St. Kitts and Nevis administration during his recovery. He asserted that the government’s operations have continued without interruption, with all necessary workloads being properly delegated. Dr. Drew highlighted the maturity and preparedness of his administration, stating that multiple contingency plans are in place to address scenarios ranging from minor disruptions to more severe eventualities.

Continuity of Governance

The Prime Minister recounted that even on the first day after his condition became apparent, while hospitalized at JNF General Hospital, he communicated with his Cabinet members. During this critical period, he was able to delegate responsibilities and outline a clear plan for governance continuity. Dr. Drew confirmed that he has been actively monitoring the country’s administration and expressed confidence in the Cabinet ministers’ performance, noting that the government has been functioning “extremely well.” He reiterated his administration’s commitment to being “mature and competent,” taking no chances in ensuring the nation’s stability and the well-being of its people.

Gratitude to Medical Teams and the Public

In his address, Prime Minister Drew extended his sincere thanks to the medical professionals who provided care. He specifically acknowledged the doctors at JNF General Hospital for their initial support on the island. Gratitude was also expressed towards the medical teams in Martinique and Florida who have been instrumental in facilitating his recovery process. The Prime Minister concluded by thanking the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis for their outpouring of support, prayers, and well wishes, which he described as a significant source of encouragement during his health challenge.

The Role of a Mature Administration

Dr. Drew’s address underscored the importance of robust governance structures, particularly in times of unexpected leadership challenges. By detailing the contingency plans and the seamless transition of duties, he aimed to reassure the public that the nation’s affairs are in capable hands. The emphasis on the administration’s maturity suggests a proactive approach to governance, ensuring that national priorities and public services remain unaffected by personal health matters of the leader. This demonstrates a commitment to the principle that government functions should be resilient and independent of any single individual.

Looking Ahead: Rehabilitation and Return to Full Duty

While the Prime Minister is actively engaged in rehabilitation, his address signals a clear path towards his eventual return to full duties. The progress he described indicates a positive outlook for his recovery. The continuity of government operations ensures that national development agendas and ongoing projects can proceed without significant delay. The public’s trust is further solidified by the transparent communication regarding both his health status and the government’s ongoing performance, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to serving the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
