A significant discovery of a potential new water source has been announced in Saddlers, St. Kitts, offering promising prospects for the island’s water supply. Minister of Energy and Utilities, Konris Maynard, revealed the findings during a session of the National Assembly on Thursday, July 30. The announcement came as a result of preliminary hydrogeological exploration conducted in the community.

Promising Signs for Water Availability

Minister Maynard expressed his satisfaction in sharing the news, stating, “It gives me great pleasure to announce and to report that we have now found water in Saddlers, yes we have found water in Saddlers, and preliminary checks are positive.” He elaborated that the initial survey results are encouraging, indicating a viable water source. The Ministry of Energy and Utilities is committed to a thorough and cautious approach as they move forward with integrating this new source into the island’s expanding water system. The focus is on ensuring the source is both secure and environmentally sustainable.

Ensuring Quality and Sustainability

The minister emphasized the importance of due diligence in the next stages of development. “As we will proceed with the same level of caution and due care so that we can have full and complete quality and integrity testing to ensure that this is a sustainable aquifer to add to our expanding water resources,” Maynard stated. Comprehensive testing will be conducted to verify the quality and long-term viability of the aquifer. Full details regarding the new water source will be made public once these extensive tests are completed.

Hydrogeological Surveys Identify Multiple Aquifer Locations

The discovery in Saddlers is part of a broader initiative to enhance St. Kitts and Nevis’s water resources. Minister Maynard explained that the department identified 17 potential aquifer locations across the islands through hydrological surveys utilizing drones. These advanced survey methods allowed for a detailed assessment of underground water potential.

Development Underway in Saddlers

Development work has already commenced at the Saddlers location, signaling the administration’s commitment to expediting the process once promising signs were detected. The department also plans to explore the remaining identified locations, including areas in St. Paul’s and Sandy Point, to assess their potential as water sources.

Broader Strategy for Water Supply Resilience

The identification and development of new water sources are integral components of the government’s comprehensive strategy to expand and secure the island’s water supply. This initiative is designed to bolster the long-term resilience of the water system across St. Kitts and Nevis.

Multi-faceted Approach to Water Security

Beyond the discovery of new groundwater sources, the government is pursuing several other measures to ensure water security and resilience. These include:

  • Groundwater Development: Actively exploring and developing existing and new groundwater reserves.
  • Desalination: Investigating and potentially implementing desalination technologies to supplement freshwater sources.
  • Expanded Storage Capacity: Increasing the island’s water storage capabilities to manage supply fluctuations and ensure availability during dry periods.
  • Upgraded Distribution Infrastructure: Modernizing the water distribution network to improve efficiency and reduce losses.

Collectively, these efforts aim to create a robust and sustainable water system capable of meeting the current and future needs of the population. The government’s commitment to a multi-pronged approach underscores the critical importance of water as a vital resource for the nation’s development and well-being.

Conclusion

The discovery of a new water source in Saddlers represents a significant step forward in addressing water security in St. Kitts and Nevis. Coupled with ongoing hydrogeological surveys and a broader strategy encompassing groundwater development, desalination, enhanced storage, and infrastructure upgrades, the nation is positioning itself for greater water resilience. The meticulous testing and careful development of the Saddlers site, along with the exploration of other identified locations, reflect a commitment to ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply for all residents.
