Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley is set to represent St. Kitts and Nevis at a high-level ministerial summit, participating virtually to present the nation’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Country Initiative. The summit, taking place on July 10, 2026, will feature Dr. Hanley delivering a key video presentation highlighting the ESD initiative as a potential model for other Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

St. Kitts and Nevis’s ESD Initiative Takes Center Stage

The St. Kitts and Nevis government has put forward its ESD Country Initiative for recognition as an emerging global best practice. This initiative aims to integrate principles of sustainability into the nation’s education system, preparing students and communities for the challenges of climate change and fostering a more resilient future. The presentation at the UNESCO summit is intended to showcase the program’s successes and its adaptability for replication in similar island nations.

Dr. Hanley expressed his pride in representing the federation on this international stage, particularly with an administration-led project like ESD. “We are honored to share our model with the world and to reaffirm UNESCO’s role as a vital partner in building a resilient education system for the future,” he stated. This sentiment underscores the collaborative spirit and the recognition of UNESCO’s crucial support in developing robust educational frameworks.

UNESCO Summit Focuses on Education and Climate Action

The high-level Ministerial Summit is being convened by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with the Greening Education Partnership (GEP). Although the summit’s formal proceedings are headquartered in Paris, France, Dr. Hanley’s participation will be virtual. The overarching objective of the summit is to bolster national education systems and enhance preparedness for the impacts of climate change, with a target year of 2030.

This significant gathering serves as a platform for international dialogue and cooperation on critical educational and environmental issues. It brings together a diverse group of participants, including ministers, educators, youth representatives, and key stakeholders from numerous countries, all focused on advancing educational strategies aligned with global sustainability goals.

Ministerial Panel and Progress Review

Beyond his featured presentation, Dr. Hanley is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion alongside education ministers from Tonga, Seychelles, and Uzbekistan. This session will provide an opportunity for these leaders to share their respective countries’ experiences and achievements with their own ESD initiatives. Such exchanges are vital for cross-pollination of ideas and best practices in education reform.

The summit also marks the fourth anniversary of the UN Transforming Education Summit (TES). A key agenda item is the comprehensive review of progress made over the past four years in implementing the TES agenda. This review will assess advancements across various educational sectors and identify areas requiring further attention or adaptation.

Greening Education: Four Pillars Under Scrutiny

A significant portion of the summit’s discussions will be dedicated to examining the progress of the Greening Education Partnership’s four main pillars. These pillars represent a holistic approach to embedding sustainability within education:

  • Greening Schools: Focusing on making educational facilities more environmentally sustainable in their operations and infrastructure.
  • Greening Every Curriculum: Integrating climate change and sustainability education across all subjects and levels.
  • Greening Teacher Training and Education System Capacities: Equipping educators with the knowledge and skills to teach about sustainability and climate action, and strengthening the capacity of education systems to support these efforts.
  • Greening Communities: Extending the principles of sustainability beyond the school walls to engage and empower local communities.

These pillars are designed to create a comprehensive framework for transforming education to meet the urgent environmental challenges of our time. The review of progress under these pillars will inform future strategies and commitments.

In-Person Representation and Global Collaboration

While Dr. Hanley participates virtually, St. Kitts and Nevis is also represented in person at the summit in Paris by Dr. David Doyle, the federation’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO. This dual presence ensures comprehensive engagement with the summit’s proceedings and facilitates direct interaction with international counterparts.

The summit’s broad participation, drawing officials from 99 countries, underscores the global recognition of the interconnectedness between education, climate change, and sustainable development. The discussions and reviews undertaken are expected to contribute significantly to shaping future educational policies and international cooperation efforts aimed at fostering a more sustainable and resilient world.

The St. Kitts and Nevis ESD Country Initiative, by being presented as a potential model, reflects the nation’s commitment to innovative educational practices and its willingness to contribute to global solutions for sustainable development. The insights gained from this summit will be invaluable as the federation continues to refine and expand its own educational programs.
