The Cardin Home, a key elder care facility, is set to receive significant enhancements through a new rehabilitation project initiated by the Ministry of Health. This initiative builds upon a series of substantial investments and improvements made to the facility in recent years, underscoring a commitment to elevating the standard of care for its residents.

Comprehensive Enhancements for Resident Well-being

The Ministry of Health has been actively investing in the Cardin Home, focusing on both professional services and the physical infrastructure to ensure a high quality of life for the elderly residents. These efforts reflect a strategic approach to public health and elder care advancement on the island.

Expansion of Professional Healthcare Services

A notable development in recent years was the appointment of the facility’s first-ever physiotherapist in 2023. This crucial addition aims to support residents in maintaining healthy physical activity levels, contributing to their overall mobility and well-being. Complementing this, the Ministry also introduced the services of nutritionists and dieticians in the same year. These professionals work to ensure that residents receive balanced and appropriate diets, tailored to their specific health needs, further promoting their general welfare.

Mental Health Unit Rehabilitation and Activity Coordination

Between 2024 and 2025, significant work was undertaken to rehabilitate the Mental Health Unit of St. Kitts and Nevis, which is part of the Cardin Home complex. This rehabilitation project for the unit has now been successfully completed. Furthermore, the facility has bolstered its recreational and social support systems by hiring an Activities Coordinator and a Deputy Activities Coordinator. This has led to the establishment of a structured program of coordinated activities designed to enrich the daily lives of the residents.

Enriching Resident Life Through Diverse Activities

The residents of Cardin Home now benefit from a vibrant schedule of monthly activities. These include engaging outings, movie nights, musical concerts, social gatherings, and prayer sessions. Occupational therapy is also integrated into the program, providing therapeutic engagement. These diverse activities are crucial for maintaining residents’ mental, social, and emotional engagement, combating isolation and fostering a sense of community.

Current Rehabilitation Project: A Major Infrastructure Overhaul

The current phase of construction represents a significant undertaking aimed at modernizing the Cardin Home’s facilities. Managed by the Public Works Department, the project utilizes labor from His Majesty’s Prison, fostering community involvement and rehabilitation opportunities.

Scope of the Rehabilitation Works

This extensive renovation project is designed to comprehensively improve the overall condition of the Cardin Home, with a particular focus on preparing the facility for its 100th anniversary in May 2027. Key areas of improvement include:

  • Roofing: Re-roofing of various residential units to ensure structural integrity and protection from the elements.
  • Utilities: Upgrades to plumbing and electrical systems to enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Structural Repairs: Carpentry work, along with repairs and upgrades to floors, walls, and windows.
  • Communal Areas: Renovation of the kitchen, laundry facilities, dining area, recreation spaces, and the physical therapy and sick bay areas.

Security and Furnishing Enhancements

Beyond the structural and utility upgrades, the project also includes enhancing the security and comfort of the facility. The Cardin Home property will be refenced to improve perimeter security. Furthermore, security cameras will be installed throughout the premises to ensure a safe environment for residents and staff. The facility will also be refurnished, providing updated and comfortable living and common spaces.

Advancing Public Health Infrastructure

The Ministry of Health views the current rehabilitation project at Cardin Home as a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to advance public health facilities. By investing in comprehensive upgrades and expanding essential services, the ministry aims to set a new standard for elder care, ensuring that residents receive the highest level of comfort, safety, and support.

The multi-faceted approach, encompassing professional staffing, therapeutic programs, and extensive infrastructure improvements, demonstrates a holistic commitment to the well-being of the elderly population. These developments are poised to ensure that Cardin Home remains a leading institution for elder care for years to come.
