Water Services Department Enhances Supply to St. Peter’s

The Water Services Department is actively implementing measures to significantly improve water provision to the St. Peter’s community, with a stated goal of establishing a consistent 24-hour water supply. This initiative aims to alleviate ongoing water challenges faced by residents.

Increased Water Pumping and Infrastructure Upgrades

Officials have confirmed that an additional 150,000 gallons of water will be directed to St. Peter’s daily. This enhanced supply will originate from the Desalination Plant located in Basseterre. The department has been diligently working to install the necessary pipeline infrastructure over the past few months.

A critical component of this upgrade is a newly acquired pump, which arrived on the island on Friday, June 12, and was subsequently installed on June 15. Water Engineer Mr. Cromwell Williams stated, “We have spent the past few months installing the necessary pipeline to do this. We also had to acquire a new pump, which only arrived on the island on Friday, June 12 and was installed on June 15.” Technical officers are currently conducting tests on this new infrastructure to ensure its optimal performance.

Leveraging Desalination Plant Capacity

The Basseterre Desalination Plant, which became operational in late February of this year, is now capable of producing surplus water. This excess capacity allows for water to be diverted to other areas. In the case of St. Peter’s, the strategic redirection of this water necessitated the development of additional infrastructure, including the new pipeline and pump.

Currently, water generated by the Basseterre Desalination Plant is being pumped into the Basseterre aquifer to serve surrounding communities. The department’s efforts extend beyond this project, as they are also actively exploring new water sources within the island to further bolster overall water security.
