Preserving Heritage: Spooner’s Cotton Ginnery Site Targeted for Cleanup

A significant cleanup initiative took place at the historic Spooner’s Cotton Ginnery in Cayon as part of the ongoing Environment Month 2026 celebrations. The exercise, held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, was spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment’s Parks and Beaches Division.

This targeted cleanup at Spooner’s Cotton Ginnery was a key component of the broader Environment Month 2026 community efforts. Officials selected the site due to its profound connection to the nation’s past, representing a pivotal era of the federation’s former cotton industry.

A Commitment to Culture and Heritage

The operation was coordinated by Javon Alfred of the Parks and Beaches Division. Alfred emphasized that the cleanup at the Ginnery is integral to a larger ministry project aimed at preserving important historical landmarks across the islands. “It’s very important for us to put our best foot forward because, it’s our culture, it’s our heritage,” Alfred stated. He further elaborated that safeguarding and revitalizing these historical sites plays a crucial role in educating future generations about the nation’s history.

Environmental Stewardship and Tourism Boost

The Department of Parks and Beaches is committed to ongoing efforts to support and preserve the natural and historical assets of the islands, recognizing their vital contribution to the tourism sector. “The role that parks and beaches play is very important, as we keep the country clean and if the country is not clean that would be a damper on tourism,” Alfred added.

Environment Month 2026 commenced on June 5, 2026, and will continue through June 27, 2026. The month-long observance features a series of events designed to promote environmental awareness and action. The initiative is organized by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment, with the theme “Climate Action: For Environment, For Empowerment, For Everyone.”

The St. Kitts and Nevis-Anguilla National Bank is serving as an official sustainability partner for Environment Month 2026.
