National Emergency Management Agency Issues Critical Water Conservation Appeal Amidst Prolonged Drought

In response to the escalating drought conditions gripping the nation, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) convened a press briefing on June 12, 2026, to convey the gravity of the situation and outline necessary public action. Officials underscored the critical need for immediate and widespread water conservation efforts.

Drought Expected to Persist Through Hurricane Season

High-level NEMA officials informed members of the media that current drought conditions are anticipated to continue well into the transatlantic hurricane season. This forecast has prompted an urgent call for residents, businesses, and all stakeholders to implement rigorous water-saving measures without delay.

“Drought conditions are likely to persist into the traditional rainy season,” announced agency representatives during the briefing. They emphasized that the less-than-ideal outlook for the coming months necessitates swift and decisive action to mitigate potential impacts.

Far-Reaching Consequences of Water Scarcity

The persistent drought poses significant threats to various sectors, including water resources, agriculture, public health, and economic activity. Officials warned that these challenges could also undermine overall national resilience.

Hurricane Season Preparedness Remains Paramount

Adding to the concerns, the upcoming months are also crucial due to the traditional hurricane season. Despite forecasts predicting a below-average hurricane season this year, officials stressed that complacency is not an option. Preparedness, they emphasized, remains a shared responsibility.

The agency urged all sectors of society to adopt comprehensive disaster management practices. The press conference featured insights from National Disaster Coordinator Livingston Pemberton, Senior Meteorological Officer Elmo Burke, Manager and Water Engineer at the St. Kitts Water Services Department, Cromwell Williams, and Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department, Brian Dyer.

NEMA continues to strongly encourage the public to stay informed, prioritize water conservation, and actively support national initiatives aimed at building resilience in the face of ongoing climate challenges.
