Traffic Advisory Issued for Official Funeral of Elston ‘King Ellie Matt’ Nero

Authorities have announced a significant traffic advisory for Basseterre as the nation prepares to bid a final farewell to cultural icon Elston “King Ellie Matt” Nero. The official funeral, a state honor recognizing his immense contributions to music and creativity, is scheduled for Thursday, June 11, 2026.

A Nation Gathers to Honor a Legend

Elston Nero, a celebrated 10-time St. Kitts National Calypso Monarch and a 7-time Road March winner, will be laid to rest in a ceremony expected to draw a large crowd of fans, admirers, family, and loved ones. The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is requesting the public’s full cooperation during this solemn occasion.

Funeral Procession Details and Expected Disruptions

The day’s events will commence with viewing and tributes at the Newtown Playfield in Basseterre, beginning at 12:00 PM. The funeral cortege is set to depart Jenkins Funeral Home on Lower Market Street at 10:30 AM. The procession will follow a specific route through the capital:

  • Left onto Central Street
  • Left onto Church Street
  • Right onto Cayon Street
  • Right down Fort Street
  • Left onto Bank Street
  • Straight on George Street
  • Left on Sand Down Road
  • Right on Pond Road
  • Left onto the Newtown Playfield

Following the conclusion of the service at the Newtown Playfield, a military procession will form on Pond Road. This procession will proceed along Cayon Street to Springfield Cemetery, entering through the southern gate on Wigley Avenue.

Advice for Motorists and the Public

Motorists are strongly advised to anticipate considerable delays and potential temporary road closures along the entire procession route. Officials urge the community to plan their travel arrangements accordingly, utilize alternative routes whenever feasible, and to observe the procession with the utmost respect.

“Let us honor a true icon of Kittitian culture with dignity,” a statement from the authorities urged, emphasizing the importance of a respectful send-off for the beloved artist.
