St. Kitts and Nevis has appointed two accomplished professionals, Gardenia Destang-Richardson and Nikisha Hazel, to key leadership positions within the Ministry of Health. The appointments, announced on Friday, July 3, 2026, aim to strengthen the nation’s health and nursing services. Gardenia Destang-Richardson will serve as the Director of Institutional Nursing Services, while Nikisha Hazel takes on the role of Director of Health Institutions. The Ministry of Health expressed confidence in their abilities and extended congratulations, anticipating significant contributions to public service and the well-being of the nation’s citizens.

Leadership Appointments in Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health highlighted its anticipation for the leadership and dedication these two individuals will bring. A statement from the ministry indicated, “We look forward to their continued leadership, dedication and contribution to enhancing the health and nursing services in the island and well-being of our people.” These appointments signify a strategic move to enhance the operational and institutional aspects of healthcare delivery across St. Kitts and Nevis.

Nikisha Hazel’s Extensive Public Health Background

Nikisha Hazel brings a wealth of experience spanning over 27 years in the healthcare sector. Her career includes a significant tenure as the Deputy Coordinator of Community Nursing Services since 2003. As a seasoned public health professional, Hazel has demonstrated a deep commitment to community health initiatives. Her leadership extends beyond her direct role within the ministry, as she actively participates in several influential professional bodies. She currently serves as the Chair of the St. Christopher and Nevis Nurses and Midwives Council and holds the position of President in the St. Kitts and Nevis Midwife Association. Furthermore, her engagement includes being a Member of the St. Kitts Diabetic Association and serving as Secretary of the Caribbean Regional Midwives Association. Academically, Hazel holds a Master of Public Health from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados, and a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Technology, Jamaica. Her qualifications are further complemented by expertise in Health Policy and Health Systems, Midwifery, and Nursing Education, providing a comprehensive foundation for her new role.

Gardenia Destang-Richardson’s Public Health Leadership

Gardenia Destang-Richardson possesses two decades of distinguished experience in public health leadership. Her notable past role includes serving as the National AIDS Programme Coordinator from 2007 to 2019. During her leadership, St. Kitts and Nevis achieved a landmark accomplishment: certification from the World Health Organization for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis. This groundbreaking achievement positioned St. Kitts and Nevis as the first country globally to receive such prestigious recognition, underscoring Richardson’s effectiveness in leading complex public health responses. Her academic background includes a Master of Science in Psychology, with a specialization in Public Administration and Social Change, and a Bachelor of Science in Behavioural Science with a minor in Health. These qualifications equip her with a unique perspective on the psychological and social determinants of health, crucial for institutional leadership.

Ministerial Confidence in New Leadership

The Minister of Health expressed strong confidence in the capabilities of both Gardenia Destang-Richardson and Nikisha Hazel. The minister stated that under their guidance, the health sector in St. Kitts and Nevis is poised for significant growth and improvement. This sentiment reflects a broader governmental commitment to advancing healthcare standards and ensuring the well-being of all citizens through strategic leadership appointments.

Enhancing Healthcare Services in St. Kitts and Nevis

The appointments of Destang-Richardson and Hazel are expected to bring fresh perspectives and robust strategies to the Ministry of Health. Their combined expertise in nursing services, health institution management, public health policy, and program coordination will be instrumental in addressing current healthcare challenges and capitalizing on opportunities for advancement. The focus on institutional nursing services and health institutions suggests a strategic emphasis on the foundational elements of healthcare delivery, aiming for enhanced efficiency, quality of care, and patient outcomes. The ministry’s proactive approach in selecting experienced leaders signals a dedication to continuous improvement and the sustained development of a resilient healthcare system for the nation.

Conclusion

The strategic appointments of Gardenia Destang-Richardson and Nikisha Hazel to senior roles within the Ministry of Health mark a significant step forward for St. Kitts and Nevis.
