The Basseterre Desalination Plant opens today, delivering up to two million gallons of potable water daily to combat chronic shortages in Basseterre and nearby areas like St. Peter’s.

Ceremony Details

Commissioning occurs at 9:00 AM at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park. Officials announced the event on February 17, 2026, marking a key step toward reliable 24-hour water service in the capital.

Plant Capacity and Impact

This facility addresses long-standing water scarcity issues plaguing St. Kitts and Nevis for nearly a decade. Construction launched on July 17, 2024, targeting persistent supply gaps caused by declining rainfall from climate shifts.

Previously, the nation relied on surface and groundwater sources, which proved insufficient amid growing demand. The new plant diversifies the water portfolio, enhancing security and service reliability for residents.

Government Response

Konris Maynard, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, stated that the plant represents a critical investment in national infrastructure and demonstrates decisive government action against the capital’s water challenges.

Broader Initiatives

St. Kitts and Nevis Water Services Department employs aerial technology to identify 17 potential drilling sites in northern regions, bolstering long-term solutions alongside desalination.
