Nation’s Defenders Honored on Significant Anniversary

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew recently addressed members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) during a ceremony marking 59 years since the pivotal events of June 10, 1967. The Prime Minister lauded the SKNDF’s crucial role in thwarting an attempted coup against the Robert L. Bradshaw administration.

New Combat Uniforms Introduced

The commemoration also saw the unveiling of the SKNDF’s new digital combat uniform. Prime Minister Drew expressed his personal pride in participating in the launch, emphasizing that the modern attire is designed for the demanding realities of the armed forces, operating across land, air, and sea.

A Legacy of Protection

During his address at the official launch parade and ceremony, Dr. Drew highlighted the enduring significance of the armed forces in safeguarding the nation over many decades. He noted that despite the country’s small size, the SKNDF has consistently protected it from those who sought to cause harm.

Recalling a Defining Moment

The Prime Minister, who also serves as Minister of National Security, referenced the predawn attack and the attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government on June 10, 2026. He recalled that the plot, orchestrated by specific individuals, also included plans to target critical national infrastructure. Dr. Drew expressed satisfaction that these individuals failed, having underestimated both the populace and the resolve of the security forces.

Resilience and Freedom

“June 10 was one of the most defining moments in the nation’s history,” stated the Minister of National Security. He elaborated that the importance of this date extends beyond the events of nearly six decades ago, serving as a perpetual reminder for each generation to remain dedicated to protecting democratic institutions and preserving the freedoms hard-won by predecessors.

“The strength of our country is not measured in square miles. It is measured in the spine of the men and women who refuse to let it fall,” Dr. Drew declared.

Custodians of National Legacy

Prime Minister Drew paid a heartfelt tribute to the members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, characterizing them as the contemporary guardians of the nation’s legacy. He described them as the living embodiment of the values that triumphed over the attempted coup almost sixty years prior.
