The St. Kitts Electricity Company Limited (SKELEC) has announced the expansion of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meter installation project into Block 2 communities. This initiative is part of SKELEC’s ongoing commitment to modernizing the nation’s electricity infrastructure.
Smart Meter Installation Underway in Block 2
SKELEC confirmed that the installation of new digital meters is now progressing to Block 2. The company made this announcement via its official social media channels, directly addressing residents with the message, “We’re moving forward Block-2 We’re coming to you.” The installation process for this phase is scheduled to take place from Saturday, July 11, to Friday, July 31, 2026.
The Block 2 areas designated for the new smart meter installations include Market Street and surrounding villages such as Freeman Village, College Housing, Shadwell Housing, Wades Garden, Soho, and Dorset Village. SKELEC representatives will be conducting the installations throughout these locations.
Resident Cooperation Essential for Smooth Installation
To ensure the efficiency and speed of the installation process, SKELEC is requesting the cooperation of residents in the affected areas. The company urges individuals to coordinate with the SKELEC representatives who will be on the ground. A key request is for residents to ensure that the locations of their old, traditional electricity meters are kept clear, safe, and easily accessible. This preparation will significantly aid the installation teams in completing their work without delay and with maximum efficiency.
Understanding Service Interruptions and Access Requirements
SKELEC has informed residents that brief interruptions to household electricity service are to be expected during the installation of the new AMI meters. The company has also clarified that it is not mandatory for residents to be present at their homes for the entire duration of the installation. However, ensuring the old meter’s location is safe and accessible remains crucial for the workers.
SKELEC’s Vision for a Modernized Grid
The expansion into Block 2 signifies SKELEC’s dedication to advancing St. Kitts’s electricity infrastructure. The organization views the AMI project as a vital step towards a more modern and efficient power grid. “We look forward to working with the communities in Block-2 as we continue this important step towards modernising St. Kitts electricity infrastructure,” a SKELEC statement indicated.
Previous Installation Success in Block 1
Prior to commencing work in Block 2, SKELEC successfully completed the initial phase of the smart meter rollout in Block 1. This earlier phase covered several communities, including Greenland, Fry’s Village, Croton Place, Hibiscus, and Needmust. The experience gained from Block 1 is expected to contribute to the smooth execution of the current phase.
Benefits of Advanced Metering Infrastructure
The implementation of AMI technology offers numerous benefits beyond just modernization. Smart meters provide more accurate and timely energy consumption data, which can lead to more precise billing for consumers. They also enable remote meter reading, reducing the need for manual site visits and improving operational efficiency for SKELEC. Furthermore, these advanced meters can facilitate quicker outage detection and restoration, enhancing grid reliability. The data collected can also support better energy management programs and help identify areas for efficiency improvements across the network.
Looking Ahead: Future Rollout Phases
While Block 2 is the current focus, SKELEC’s smart meter rollout is a comprehensive, multi-phase project. The company plans to extend the installation to other areas across St. Kitts in subsequent phases. Residents in upcoming phases will receive similar notifications and instructions regarding the installation process. SKELEC encourages all customers to stay informed through official communication channels for updates on when their communities will be scheduled for the upgrade.
The transition to smart meters is a significant technological upgrade for the island’s power distribution system. It aligns St. Kitts with global trends in utility modernization, aiming to provide more reliable, efficient, and customer-centric energy services. SKELEC’s proactive approach in communicating with residents and seeking their cooperation underscores the importance of community engagement in such large-scale infrastructure projects.
