The St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) has announced a series of planned power outages, commonly referred to as load shedding, affecting several communities on the island. These scheduled interruptions are part of essential maintenance efforts aimed at ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the electricity supply. The company is providing advance notice to residents and businesses in the affected areas to allow them to prepare for the temporary loss of power.

Load Shedding Schedule and Affected Areas

The planned maintenance will impact specific regions on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. SKELEC has detailed the schedule to inform the public about the duration and timing of the power disruptions.

Sandy Point and Hermitage

In Sandy Point, including the Alley Area, residents can expect a four-hour power interruption. The electricity supply is scheduled to be cut off from 9:00 AM and restored around 1:00 PM. This period is designated for critical maintenance work within the local grid infrastructure.

Cayon Village

The power outage for Cayon Village and the neighboring Hermitage community is slated to be longer. These areas will experience a six-hour disruption, commencing at 9:00 AM and with power expected to return by approximately 3:00 PM. This extended duration allows for more comprehensive maintenance tasks to be completed.

Purpose of the Maintenance Drive

SKELEC officials emphasize that these load shedding exercises are not arbitrary but are integral to the company’s commitment to maintaining high operational standards and enhancing the overall reliability of the power grid. Regular maintenance is crucial for preventing unexpected failures and ensuring a consistent electricity supply to all consumers.

The company stated that by proactively addressing potential issues through scheduled maintenance, they aim to minimize the likelihood of longer, unscheduled outages in the future. This approach is part of their ongoing mandate to improve service delivery and infrastructure integrity.

Public Advisory and Preparations

SKELEC is urging residents and business owners in the affected zones to take necessary precautions. It is advisable to protect sensitive electrical appliances from potential power surges that can occur just before an outage begins or immediately after power is restored. Unplugging sensitive equipment or using surge protectors is recommended during the scheduled outage windows.

The company acknowledges that the precise start and end times for the outages may vary slightly. Power could be restored a few minutes earlier or later than the officially announced times due to the complexities of managing grid operations. SKELEC encourages the public to remain flexible and to monitor for any last-minute updates.

Staying Informed and Contacting SKELEC

To keep the public informed, SKELEC utilizes its official WhatsApp channels and social media pages for disseminating updates regarding the maintenance schedule and any potential changes. Residents are encouraged to follow these platforms for the most current information.

SKELEC has extended an apology to the communities that will be inconvenienced by these necessary maintenance activities. They express understanding for any disruptions these outages may cause to daily routines and business operations.

For direct inquiries or further assistance, SKELEC has provided contact information for its offices. This ensures that customers can easily reach out to the company with questions or concerns related to the scheduled load shedding or any other electricity service matters.

Commitment to Service Reliability

The scheduled maintenance underscores SKELEC’s dedication to providing a stable and dependable power supply to the residents of St. Kitts. By investing time and resources into regular upkeep and modernization of the electrical infrastructure, the company aims to meet the growing energy demands of the island while minimizing service interruptions.

The cooperation and understanding of the public are vital during these maintenance periods. SKELEC views these exercises as a collaborative effort towards achieving a more robust and reliable energy future for the entire island community.
