Prime Minister Terrance Drew recently addressed the National Assembly, outlining a four-year period of significant progress across key sectors under the administration he leads. The address focused on initiatives and investments aimed at enhancing the lives of citizens and strengthening the nation’s infrastructure and public services.

Advancing Good Governance and Transparency

A cornerstone of the administration’s achievements, as highlighted by Prime Minister Drew, is the implementation of robust good governance and transparency legislation. Central to this effort was the introduction of the Integrity in Public Life Bill. This landmark legislation mandates that all members of the administration annually declare their financial assets, establishing a new standard for accountability within public service. Prime Minister Drew emphasized that this measure represents a pivotal step forward in fostering transparency and ensuring that public officials are held to a high standard of ethical conduct.

Investing in Water Security

Significant investments have been directed towards ensuring water security across the nation. Prime Minister Drew detailed how the administration has prioritized improving access to potable water, a critical resource for all citizens. Upon taking office, the government observed that only 24% of households had consistent 24-hour water service. In response, substantial investments were made, including the development of a 2 Million Gallon Desalination Plant, the drilling of new wells in Cayon, and recent drilling efforts in the Saddlers Community. These initiatives have dramatically improved the water supply situation. The Water Services Department has also undertaken extensive pipeline projects to enhance distribution across various communities. Officials report that these efforts have led to a significant improvement, with over 70% of households now enjoying regular access to potable water.

Strengthening the Healthcare Sector

The healthcare sector has also been a major focus for investment and improvement under the current administration. Prime Minister Drew, who also serves as Minister of Health, detailed critical upgrades and investments made to enhance medical services. Key among these was the comprehensive repair and rehabilitation of the JNF General Hospital’s roof, alongside numerous structural and other essential upgrades to the facility. Recognizing the vital role of emergency medical services, the administration also invested in acquiring a new fleet of ambulances, bolstering the island’s capacity to respond to medical emergencies effectively.

Supporting Public Servants and the Financial Sector

In recognition of the dedication and hard work of public sector employees, the government has implemented a substantial pay raise. Civil sector employees have received an 8% increase in their salaries, a move aimed at acknowledging their contributions and improving their economic well-being. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support the nation’s workforce and ensure a stable and motivated civil service. Furthermore, developments within the financial sector were also noted, underscoring the administration’s commitment to economic stability and growth.

A Vision for Continued Progress

Prime Minister Drew’s address underscored a commitment to continued progress and development across all facets of national life. The initiatives highlighted over the past four years reflect a strategic approach to governance, focusing on tangible improvements in public services, infrastructure, and the overall quality of life for the citizens. The administration’s efforts in transparency, water security, healthcare, and support for public servants demonstrate a clear dedication to building a more resilient and prosperous nation.

The progress detailed in the National Assembly serves as a testament to the administration’s proactive governance and its focus on addressing the core needs of the population. Moving forward, the administration appears poised to build upon these foundations, continuing its work to foster sustainable development and enhance the well-being of all residents.
