Nevis-Connected Film “Pan Gyul” Achieves Dual Wins at Cannes Showcase
The short film Pan Gyul, which prominently features individuals from Nevis in its cast, has secured two prestigious awards at the 2026 Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase. This independent event runs concurrently with the renowned Cannes Film Festival.
Island Pride and Film Industry Ambitions
The Premier of Nevis celebrated this significant accomplishment, viewing it as a source of immense pride for the island. He emphasized that the film’s success aligns with the administration’s strategic vision to cultivate a thriving film industry on Nevis.
Speaking to the island’s residents, the Premier highlighted the global stature of the Cannes Film Festival, held annually in Cannes, France. He expressed particular pride in Pan Gyul, directed by Juliette Jeffers, a filmmaker with Nevisian heritage, and filmed entirely on Nevis. The film had garnered six nominations prior to winning two awards at the showcase.
Award Recognition
Among the accolades, director Juliette Jeffers received the Best First-Time Filmmaker award. The Best Original Song award for “Kaiso Estasy” was presented to Javid Allen of St. Kitts. The production of Pan Gyul involved a substantial number of stakeholders from the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, contributing to numerous recognitions for the country.
Upcoming Screenings and Industry Development
The film’s success is set to continue, with upcoming screenings at several other film festivals. Pan Gyul has been officially selected for the American Black Film Festival, where it will be featured in the Voices of Culture Showcase.
The Premier also provided an update on Nevis’s ongoing efforts to establish a robust film industry. Initiatives aimed at fostering industry growth have been in progress since the onset of the pandemic. Despite initial challenges and some resistance, sustained efforts have led to remarkable progress and growth within the sector.
