Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley has issued a compelling invitation to citizens living abroad, encouraging them to reconnect with their homeland by returning, investing, and actively contributing to the nation’s ongoing development. This appeal was central to his keynote address at the St. Kitts and Nevis Association of Georgia’s (SKANAG) Annual Independence Gala Dinner, held in Stone Mountain, Georgia, on September 12.

Strengthening Ties with the Diaspora

The gala, a sold-out event that brought together nationals from Georgia and across the United States, served as a vibrant celebration of St. Kitts and Nevis’s heritage and a recognition of the significant contributions made by citizens both at home and overseas. Premier Brantley, attending as a featured guest, emphasized the importance of maintaining and renewing connections with the country of birth and ancestry.

His message resonated with attendees, urging them to consider returning to live, invest, and participate in the future growth and prosperity of the nation. This call is a key initiative of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) aimed at fostering deeper engagement with Nevisians residing outside the federation.

Nevis Island Administration’s Initiatives

The Nevis Island Administration is actively working to create tangible pathways for its citizens abroad who wish to return or invest in Nevis. In line with this vision, the NIA has established a dedicated Diaspora Unit. This specialized unit is designed to provide comprehensive support to nationals living overseas, assisting them with the processes involved in returning to Nevis or making investments on the island.

Premier Brantley highlighted specific programs designed to harness the skills, experience, and financial resources of the overseas community. A notable example is the Returning Nationals and Diaspora Investment Programme. This initiative specifically aims to encourage members of the diaspora to return and establish businesses, thereby creating valuable employment opportunities and stimulating the local economy.

Key Aspects of the Investment Programme:

  • Encouraging Return: Providing incentives and support for individuals and families looking to relocate back to Nevis.
  • Facilitating Investment: Streamlining processes for diaspora members interested in investing in various sectors of the Nevisian economy.
  • Job Creation: Prioritizing business ventures that will generate employment for local residents.
  • Skill Transfer: Leveraging the expertise and experience gained by nationals abroad to benefit the island’s development.

A Vital Part of National Development

Premier Brantley’s participation in the Georgia gala underscored the government’s consistent message: nationals living abroad are an integral component of Nevis’s development strategy. The administration recognizes the immense potential that the diaspora holds, not only in terms of financial investment but also in bringing back valuable skills, knowledge, and global perspectives.

By actively engaging with and supporting its diaspora, Nevis aims to foster a stronger sense of national unity and collective progress. The initiatives launched by the NIA are designed to make returning or investing a more accessible and attractive prospect, ensuring that the talents and resources of Nevisians worldwide can be effectively channeled towards building a more prosperous future for the island.

Looking Ahead

The Premier’s address served as a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between Nevis and its people, wherever they may be. The ongoing efforts by the Nevis Island Administration, including the dedicated Diaspora Unit and investment programs, signal a clear commitment to building bridges and creating opportunities for a mutually beneficial relationship between the nation and its global community. The administration is optimistic that these efforts will lead to increased engagement, investment, and a strengthened sense of belonging for all Nevisians.
