St. Kitts’ emerging talent, Jahzara Claxton, has been named in the 15-member West Indies Women’s squad for their upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Ireland. The series commenced today, July 10, 2026, at the Bready Cricket Club in Northern Ireland, marking a significant step in the young player’s international career.

Squad Announcement and Team Dynamics

The Cricket West Indies Association revealed the squad on Thursday, July 9, 2026. The team selected for this bilateral series against Ireland largely mirrors the squad that recently competed in a tri-series involving Ireland and Pakistan. A single change has been made to the roster, with Realeanna Grimmond stepping in to replace the injured Chanel Henry, who is unavailable for the duration of the series.

This tour to Ireland represents the West Indies Women’s Cricket team’s third engagement in the crucial ICC Women’s Championship. This championship is a vital pathway for teams aiming to secure qualification for the prestigious World Cup. The points earned in these matches are essential for the team’s overall standing and their prospects of reaching the global tournament.

Coach’s Perspective on the Challenge

Shane Deitz, the head coach of the West Indies Women’s team, acknowledged the formidable challenge that awaits them. Playing on Irish soil against a home team presents a unique set of difficulties. Deitz emphasized the importance of rapid adaptation to the local conditions and environment.

“Ireland would be a tough opponent in their conditions, and we need to adapt fast and make sure we play some good cricket,” Deitz stated. Her comments highlight the strategic focus on acclimatization and performance in unfamiliar surroundings. The coaching staff is prioritizing the team’s ability to quickly adjust to the pitches, weather, and overall atmosphere to maximize their chances of success.

Match Schedule and Venue

The ODI series is set to feature three matches, all taking place at the Bready Cricket Club in Bready, Northern Ireland. Following the series opener today, the second ODI is scheduled for Sunday, July 14, 2026. The final match of the series will be played on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the same venue.

West Indies Women’s Squad for Ireland Tour

The complete 15-member squad selected for the tour of Ireland is as follows:

  • Hayley Matthews (Captain)
  • Aaliyah Alleyn

  • Jahzara Claxton
  • Deandra Dottin
  • Afy Fletcher

Significance of the ICC Women’s Championship

The ICC Women’s Championship serves as the primary qualification tournament for the Women’s Cricket World Cup. Teams compete in a series of bilateral ODI series against other top-ranked nations over a specified period. The top-ranked teams at the conclusion of the championship automatically secure a spot in the World Cup. For West Indies, this series against Ireland is a crucial opportunity to accumulate vital championship points and bolster their campaign for World Cup qualification. Each match, and indeed each point, carries significant weight in the long-term objective of competing on the world stage.

Looking Ahead

With the series now underway, the West Indies Women will be looking to leverage their experience and adapt quickly to the Irish conditions. The inclusion of Jahzara Claxton signals confidence in the emerging talent within the squad, and her performance will be closely watched. The team’s ability to perform consistently under pressure and secure positive results in this championship series will be key to their aspirations for the upcoming World Cup.
