The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (St. Christopher and Nevis Circuit) recently convened a special court sitting to commemorate the life and extensive career of the late Charles Lucien Arthur Wilkin. The distinguished legal icon, who passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the age of 77, was celebrated for his 55 years of dedicated service to the legal profession and the administration of justice within St. Kitts and Nevis and across the wider Eastern Caribbean region.

A Career of Distinction and Service

Held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the special sitting brought together members of the judiciary, legal fraternity, and government officials. Attendees gathered to pay homage to Wilkin’s significant contributions and the profound impact he had on the legal landscape. Prominent legal figures delivered tributes, highlighting not only his professional achievements but also his role as a mentor to aspiring attorneys.

Among those who shared their reflections were Delano Bart KC, President of the OECS Bar Association, and Kurlyn Merchant, President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association. Anthony Gonsalves KC was also in attendance. Their words underscored Wilkin’s commitment to the development of the legal profession and his lasting influence on successive generations of legal practitioners.

The event also saw the presence of Garth Wilkin, son of the late Charles Wilkin and the current Attorney General of St. Kitts and Nevis. He was joined by members of the Bench and Bar, underscoring the broad respect and admiration held for his father within the legal community.

Foundations and Early Career

Charles Wilkin’s journey in law began after his early education in St. Kitts. He pursued higher education in law at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he earned a Master of Arts degree. His professional legal career commenced in 1988 when he partnered with Frederick Kelsick to establish the firm Kelsick and Wilkin.

In the same year he began his practice, Wilkin was appointed Queen’s Counsel, a testament to his early standing and expertise in the field. His career was marked by diverse roles and significant responsibilities beyond his legal practice.

Key Roles and Contributions

  • Electoral Commission: From 1988 to 1996, Wilkin served as the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, playing a crucial role in the electoral processes of the nation.
  • TDC Director: Since 1979, he held a directorship with TDC, contributing to the company’s leadership and strategic direction for many years.
  • Media Entrepreneurship: Wilkin was also the founder of WINNFM, a prominent independent radio station in St. Kitts and Nevis known for its focus on current affairs, demonstrating his commitment to public discourse and information dissemination.
  • Author: In November 2015, he published his first book, “Breaking the Cycle – Politics, Constitutional Change and Governance in St. Kitts and Nevis,” offering insights into the nation’s political landscape and governance structures.

A Lasting Legacy

The special sitting served as a poignant reminder of Charles Wilkin’s multifaceted career and his enduring legacy. His dedication to legal principles, his contributions to public service, and his role in mentoring future legal professionals were central themes throughout the tributes. The event emphasized the significant void left by his passing but also celebrated the profound and lasting influence he continues to exert on the legal community and the nation.

The gathering was an opportunity for colleagues, friends, and family to reflect on a life devoted to the pursuit of justice and the betterment of the legal profession. The principles and dedication exemplified by Charles Wilkin are expected to continue inspiring legal practitioners in St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider Eastern Caribbean for years to come.
