Construction on the new Basseterre High School progresses steadily, with officials confirming the departure of the first equipment shipment from Barbados to the Victoria Road site.

Prime Minister’s Update on Historic Project

Prime Minister Terrance Drew highlighted the milestone on social media, calling it a significant step for St. Kitts and Nevis’ education sector. He emphasized that the island’s residents eagerly anticipate the revival of this landmark educational institution, which holds a cherished place in national history.

The school has produced generations of teachers, doctors, public servants, business leaders, and national figures. Its alumni have represented the country on regional and international platforms.

Project Timeline and Revival Efforts

Development stalled between 2015 and 2022 following the demolition of the original structure, disappointing locals who awaited reconstruction. The current administration recommitted to the project upon taking office in 2022, pledging to rebuild at the historic Victoria Road location in Basseterre.

Key milestones include:

  • Demolition of remaining structures in December 2023
  • Site mapping and conceptual design in 2024
  • Physical construction starting in June 2025

Precast Concrete System in Use

Workers employ a precast concrete system, where structural components are fabricated off-site and transported for assembly. This approach supports efficient progress on the project.

Public Reactions and Concerns

While the updates signal positive momentum, some residents near the site question the pace, noting limited visible activity. Critics also raise issues about local job opportunities, given the importation of major components via the precast method. Officials maintain that the project advances as planned, benefiting the community’s educational future.
