Construction on the new Basseterre High School (BHS) is progressing steadily, with foundational work completed for two key classroom buildings. Minister of Education, Geoffrey Hanley, recently toured the site alongside various stakeholders, expressing his satisfaction with the project’s current phase and anticipating its successful completion.

Progress Update on New Basseterre High School

During a site visit on July 10th, Minister Hanley, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, was joined by officials from the Ministry of Education, the Department of Education, the Principal and Deputy Principal of the existing Basseterre High School, representatives from the Public Works Department, and the Project Management Team. The tour provided an opportunity for all involved parties to receive comprehensive updates on the various stages of construction for the new educational facility.

Significant milestones have already been achieved, including the laying of foundations for Buildings A and B. These structures are designated to house classrooms for the new BHS. According to site personnel, work on the new auditorium is slated to commence the following week, marking another crucial step forward.

Minister Hanley’s Perspective on the Project

Minister Hanley conveyed his positive assessment of the construction progress. “I thought it was important for us to bring all the various stakeholders together so that they can see what is happening and understand the construction process,” he stated. “I am happy that the Project Manager will provide us with an update about the ongoing development.” The Minister emphasized his anticipation for the project’s eventual completion and full operational status.

Detailed Construction Phases and Timeline

Luis Martinez, the Project Manager from Preconco St. Kitts Limited, provided detailed insights into the construction sequence and ongoing activities. He confirmed that the initial focus has been on Buildings A and B, which are dedicated to classroom instruction.

Martinez elaborated on the immediate next steps:

  • Auditorium Construction: Excavation for the foundation of Building C, which will house the auditorium, is scheduled to begin next week. This building is considered particularly vital for the new school’s facilities.
  • Building B Progress: Current work on Building B involves pouring the “off stem walls” and completing the final column.
  • Upcoming Activities: The following week’s efforts will concentrate on placing the “frail” (likely referring to formwork or reinforcement) and pouring the slab, which will prepare the site for the installation of pre-cast elements.

The Project Manager further indicated that the structural framework for Building B is projected to be finished within the next two and a half months. The overarching objective for the project team is to achieve full completion and functionality within a 14-month timeframe.

Importance of Stakeholder Collaboration

The collaborative approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders from government departments, educational leadership, and the construction sector, underscores the commitment to transparency and shared understanding throughout the development of the new Basseterre High School. This unified effort aims to ensure that the project meets its objectives efficiently and effectively, providing a modern and well-equipped learning environment for students.

Future Outlook for Basseterre High School

The new Basseterre High School represents a significant investment in the nation’s educational infrastructure. The progress observed, coupled with the detailed planning shared by the project management team, suggests a positive trajectory towards realizing the vision of a state-of-the-art facility. The successful and timely completion of this project is expected to enhance the educational experience for current and future generations of students in Basseterre.
