New Digital Combat Uniform Marks 59th Anniversary of Foiled Coup

The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force has unveiled a new digital combat uniform, coinciding with the 59th anniversary of a pivotal event on June 10, 1967. On this date, an attempted overthrow of the Robert L. Bradshaw Government was successfully thwarted.

Commemoration of Resilience and Sacrifice

Reports indicate that on June 10, 1967, Anguillan insurgents launched an attack on Camp Springfield with the aim of destabilizing the administration of Robert L. Bradshaw. The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force responded with notable courage, sacrifice, and resilience, effectively neutralizing the threat.

In a ceremony honoring the defense force’s efforts in safeguarding the federation from this attempted coup, members marched in the new uniforms. The procession began at Warner Park, proceeded down Victoria Road, continued onto Cayon Street, and then onto Church Street.

Prime Minister Addresses Defense Force

During the march, soldiers paused at the Government Headquarters to hear remarks from Prime Minister Dr. Terrence Drew. Following this, the march resumed along Liverpool Row, Fort Street, and Central Street, concluding at Camp Springfield.

The Acting Commander, Major Kayode Sutton, led the commemorative march. Officials highlighted that the introduction of the new Digital Combat dress aligns with Major Sutton’s strategic vision to foster professionalization, modernization, and growth within the defense force.

Enduring Legacy of Courage

The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force acknowledged the bravery, determination, and resolve displayed by the soldiers who defended Camp Springfield nearly six decades ago. A statement from the force emphasized, “Their services and sacrifice remain etched in our history and continue to inspire every generation of soldiers who follow.”

Major Kayode Sutton further commented on the ongoing readiness of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force. He stated that for decades, men and women of the force have consistently been prepared to protect the nation’s sovereignty, support law enforcement agencies, contribute to regional security, provide early responses to natural disasters, and engage in community work within St. Kitts and Nevis.

Commitment to Preparedness

Reflecting on the new uniform launch, Major Sutton remarked, “Today’s launch renews that commitment and shows our determination to remain prepared, relevant and effective in every mission.” The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force also shared visual highlights of the march on its official social media channels.
