St. Kitts and Nevis government has partnered with Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis through a Memorandum of Understanding, committing $105,000 to broaden the Unified Champion Schools program over the next three years.

Partnership Signing Ceremony

Officials signed the MoU on April 1, 2026, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, establishing the twin-island nation as a partner in the Global Coalition for Inclusion Partnership for 2026-2028. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Development and Disability, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, represented the government, while Ivor Balke, National Director of Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis, signed for the organization.

Program Goals and Expansion

The initiative fosters leadership development, inclusive learning, and school engagement through sports. It began several years ago at Cotton-Thomas Comprehensive School and two primary schools, yielding significant results by educating students on avoiding discrimination and reducing such incidents nationwide.

With the new funding, the program expands to 18 schools, training 80 teachers and involving over 1,000 students, including 150 with intellectual disabilities.

Key Statements from Leaders

Ivor Balke described the signing as a celebration of partnership leadership, emphasizing that every individual with an intellectual disability deserves a place to grow, learn, and thrive.

Lorna Bell, Executive Director of Special Olympics Caribbean, congratulated the government for this bold step toward greater inclusion.

Dr. Geoffrey Hanley called it an honor to sign the landmark MoU, stating it will strengthen societal fabric by promoting belonging. He highlighted the federation’s achievements in supporting intellectual disability communities since 2022, including improved public building access, expanded transportation, and sign language features across the region.

Since 2022, the government has prioritized enhancing lives for persons with disabilities through these accessibility measures.
