St. Kitts and Nevis commits to spearheading direct air links between Africa and the Caribbean through Minimum Revenue Guarantees (MRGs), an innovative financing model to support airlines.

Key Announcement at Afri-Caribbean Summit

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew highlighted this proposal in his closing remarks at the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit in Abuja, Nigeria, on March 28. He emphasized the need to overcome longstanding barriers hindering trade and collaboration between the regions.

Drew questioned the absence of direct routes, asking, “Why do we have to go north to come south?” He pointed out the inefficiencies and indignities faced by travelers due to the lack of nonstop flights, noting that the distance from St. Kitts and Nevis to England matches that to Abuja.

Proven Success and Leadership Role

The Prime Minister cited St. Kitts and Nevis’s strong aviation development history, where MRGs have successfully drawn major international carriers. The nation positions itself as a vital bridge to close the aviation gap, ready to provide initial guarantees to airlines launching these routes.

Economic and Cultural Benefits

Direct connectivity promises to unlock opportunities in trade, tourism, investment, and culture while fostering stronger people-to-people ties. Dr. Drew urged governments, investors, and private sectors to collaborate in realizing this vision for seamless Africa-Caribbean air travel.
