St. Kitts and Nevis has hosted a goodwill visit from Taiwan’s Navy, the first in 23 years, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between the two nations. The delegation comprises 700 officers, crew members, and cadets participating in Taiwan’s overseas training program for senior midshipmen prior to their graduation and commissioning.
This marks the third such visit to the island nation, following previous stops in 2002 and 2003.
Official Welcome Ceremony
Leaders gathered at Port Zante for a formal welcome ceremony, including Governor General Dame Marcella Liburd, Deputy Governor-General for Nevis Hyleeta Liburd, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, Nevis Premier Mark Brantley, and Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) His Excellency Edward Ling-Wen Tao.
Key Remarks from Officials
Ambassador Tao highlighted the squadron’s 9,000-nautical-mile voyage as evidence of Taiwan’s dedication to deepening relations. “While the two nations are thousands of miles apart, St. Kitts and Nevis remains in the minds of Taiwan,” he noted. He added, “It is my sincere hope that this goodwill mission will open new avenues of cooperation in national security and maritime safety.”
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew called the occasion historic, stating it “serves as a powerful symbol of friendship and a longstanding commitment to national development.”
Local residents toured the naval vessel, explored its facilities, and engaged with midshipmen to learn about Taiwan’s maritime training and capabilities.
