The Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis in Taiwan has launched its second annual SKNLOVE Summer Camp, an initiative designed to foster cultural understanding and educate participants about the twin-island federation’s heritage and sustainable development goals. The five-day camp commenced on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Nan Shan High School in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City, and is scheduled to conclude on Friday, August 14, 2026. This year’s program is centered around the theme, “St. Kitts and Nevis’s Sustainable Island State Agenda,” highlighting the nation’s commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term development.

Opening Ceremony and Cultural Exchange

The camp officially opened with a ceremony featuring remarks from Ambassador Donya L. Francis of the St. Kitts and Nevis Embassy and Principal Tsai of Nan Shan High School. Both leaders welcomed the young attendees, emphasizing the significance of cultural exchange and mutual learning between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan. Ambassador Francis took the opportunity to introduce the campers to the people, culture, and ongoing development initiatives within her home country, providing a foundational understanding of the federation.

Exploring St. Kitts and Nevis Heritage

The inaugural day of the SKNLOVE Summer Camp was dedicated to exploring the rich history and heritage of St. Kitts and Nevis. Embassy volunteer Jacinth Hunkins led an engaging session focusing on the federation’s historical sites and landmarks. Hunkins presented detailed histories of four prominent locations:

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this historic fortress offers panoramic views and a deep dive into the region’s military past.
  • Black Rocks: A unique geological formation on the coast of St. Kitts, known for its dramatic volcanic rock landscape.
  • Historic Sugar Mills: Remnants of the island’s once-thriving sugar industry, these structures represent a significant part of the nation’s economic and social history.
  • Bath Hotel: Located in Nevis, this historic hotel is associated with the island’s colonial past and its early tourism development.

Following the presentation, campers participated in a creative and interactive activity where they worked collaboratively to design and construct models of these landmarks. This hands-on approach, supported by embassy volunteers, aimed to deepen the campers’ understanding and appreciation of St. Kitts and Nevis’s heritage in an engaging manner.

Volunteer Efforts and School Collaboration

The success of the camp’s first day was significantly attributed to the dedicated efforts of the embassy volunteers, including Desmond Maynard, Ezrah Brandy, D’Quani Clarke, Jahmarley Riley, and Tyrique Jeffers. Their commitment ensured that the day was both informative and memorable for all participants. The Embassy also formally acknowledged the invaluable collaboration and support provided by Nan Shan High School, whose facilities served as the venue for the camp.

Broader Objectives of the SKNLOVE Summer Camp

The SKNLOVE Summer Camp serves as a vital platform for the Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis to educate the Taiwanese public about the federation’s unique history, vibrant culture, and its progressive journey towards sustainable development. By engaging directly with students and the wider community, the embassy aims to build stronger bilateral ties and foster a greater appreciation for the Caribbean nation.

Sister School Relationship

A notable aspect of this cultural initiative is the existing sister school relationship between Nan Shan High School in Taiwan and Dr. Denzil L. Douglas Secondary School, located in Saddles Villages, St. Kitts. This established connection provides a strong foundation for ongoing educational and cultural exchanges, further strengthening the bond between the two institutions and their respective countries.

Sustainable Island State Agenda

The camp’s theme, “St. Kitts and Nevis’s Sustainable Island State Agenda,” underscores the nation’s forward-looking approach. St. Kitts and Nevis is actively pursuing policies aimed at achieving sustainable development, balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity. This includes initiatives in renewable energy, conservation, waste management, and promoting a blue and green economy. The camp provides an opportunity to share these national priorities with an international audience, fostering dialogue and potential collaboration on global sustainability challenges.

Conclusion

The SKNLOVE Summer Camp represents a significant diplomatic and cultural outreach effort by the Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis in Taiwan. Through interactive sessions, historical explorations, and a focus on sustainable development, the camp successfully educates young Taiwanese participants about the federation’s identity and aspirations. The initiative not only enriches the campers’ understanding but also strengthens the people-to-people connections between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, building a foundation for future cooperation and mutual respect.
