St. Kitts and Nevis has successfully concluded a three-day technical training workshop focused on advancing aquaculture practices, specifically within the context of the ongoing Shrimp and Finfish Pilot Grow-out Project. The event, hosted by the Department of Marine Resources on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, culminated in a certificate presentation ceremony for all participants, celebrating their newly acquired skills and commitment to the sector’s growth.

Aquaculture Development in St. Kitts and Nevis

The workshop, held from Tuesday, July 21, to Thursday, July 23, 2026, was a key component of the broader Shrimp and Finfish Pilot Grow-out Project, a collaborative initiative between the government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This project, implemented in June 2024, aims to bolster the nation’s capacity in shrimp and finfish cultivation.

Officials from the Department of Marine Resources expressed satisfaction with the workshop’s outcome, describing it as a resounding success that concluded on a high note. The certificate ceremony not only recognized the participants’ achievements but also underscored the project’s role in fostering a more robust aquaculture sector within the federation. By equipping individuals with advanced knowledge and practical skills, the initiative seeks to strengthen the network of professionals dedicated to supporting and expanding marine resource utilization.

Key Training Areas and Skills Acquired

Participants engaged in intensive training designed to provide comprehensive insights into sustainable aquaculture. The curriculum covered a range of critical areas essential for successful shrimp and finfish farming:

  • Sustainable Aquaculture Practices: Participants learned modern, environmentally conscious methods to ensure the long-term viability of aquaculture operations.
  • Shrimp Grow-out Systems: In-depth knowledge and practical skills were imparted regarding the specific techniques for growing shrimp to market size.
  • Infrastructure Design: Training included essential aspects of designing and constructing suitable facilities for aquaculture, such as tank systems.
  • Water Management: Participants received education on maintaining optimal water quality, a crucial factor for aquatic health and productivity.
  • Biosecurity: Emphasis was placed on implementing stringent biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks and protect farmed stocks.
  • Best Practices: The workshop covered industry-standard best practices to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and high-quality output.

During the workshop, specific attention was given to practical aspects. For instance, on the second day, participants delved into the intricacies of tank construction design, including the installation of plumbing and aeration systems, and the setup of round tank systems. This hands-on approach ensured that trainees could translate theoretical knowledge into practical application.

Looking Ahead: Advancing Local Production and Food Security

The Department of Marine Resources extended congratulations to all individuals who completed the training. A spokesperson highlighted the importance of applying these newly acquired skills to enhance local fish production and contribute significantly to national food security. By developing a skilled workforce and promoting advanced aquaculture techniques, St. Kitts and Nevis aims to reduce reliance on imported seafood and create greater self-sufficiency.

The Shrimp and Finfish Pilot Grow-out Project, identified by the project code TCP/SLC/4002, represents a strategic investment in the nation’s agricultural and marine sectors. The continued collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources and the FAO is pivotal to the project’s success and the broader development of a thriving aquaculture industry in St. Kitts and Nevis. The skills and knowledge disseminated through such workshops are fundamental to building a resilient and productive marine resource sector for the future.
