St. Kitts and Nevis has emerged victorious at the 2026 Athletic Championship of the Association of National Olympic Committees of the English-speaking Caribbean (ANOCES), securing the top spot with a commanding 180 points. The prestigious two-day event, held on Saturday, July 4th, and Sunday, July 5th, took place at the Kim Collins Stadium in the Bird Rock area of Basseterre.

A Fierce Competition Unfolds

The championship saw intense competition among several Caribbean nations, highlighting the growing athletic prowess in the region. Following closely behind the champions, Antigua & Barbuda secured the second position with 171 points. The British Virgin Islands rounded out the top three, earning 130 points.

In addition to the top three finishers, six other national teams participated, showcasing a broad spectrum of talent. The final standings for the remaining competitors were:

  • Anguilla: 35 points
  • Dominica: 76 points
  • Saint Lucia: 70 points
  • Montserrat: 11 points
  • Grenada: 92 points
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines: 123 points

Dramatic Comeback Secures Victory

The tournament’s narrative was marked by a significant shift in the standings. On the opening day, St. Vincent and the Grenadines led the pack with 91 points, closely trailed by the British Virgin Islands, who were just one point behind with 90 points. Antigua & Barbuda also put in a strong performance, finishing the first day in third place with 76 points. St. Kitts and Nevis, meanwhile, found themselves in fourth place after the initial day’s events, accumulating 64 points.

However, the tide turned dramatically on the final day. The St. Kitts and Nevis team staged an impressive comeback, adding an exceptional 125 points to their tally. This surge propelled them from fourth place to the championship’s summit, ultimately securing their first-place finish with a total of 180 points. The team’s remarkable performance on the second day was crucial in overcoming the initial deficit and outpacing their rivals.

Recognition and Congratulations

The St. Kitts and Nevis Athletics Association officially announced their victory on their social media channels, celebrating the team’s outstanding achievement. The association extended its congratulations to the athletes for their dedication and performance at the ANOCES Athletic Championship.

Further demonstrating the spirit of sportsmanship, the British Virgin Islands Athletics Association also offered congratulations to the victorious St. Kitts and Nevis team for their phenomenal performance. They also acknowledged the efforts of the Antigua & Barbuda athletics team, recognizing their strong showing in the competition.

The Significance of the ANOCES Athletic Championship

The Athletic Championship of ANOCES serves as a vital platform for athletes from English-speaking Caribbean nations to compete, develop their skills, and foster regional camaraderie. The event not only celebrates athletic excellence but also strengthens the bonds between participating countries through sport.

Held annually, the championship provides a crucial opportunity for national athletics associations to identify emerging talent and for athletes to gain valuable international competition experience. The Kim Collins Stadium, named after the renowned Kittitian sprinter, has once again proven to be a fitting venue for showcasing top-tier regional athletics.

Looking Ahead

The success of St. Kitts and Nevis at the 2026 ANOCES Athletic Championship is a testament to the hard work and strategic planning of their athletics program. This victory is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes in the nation and across the region. As the Caribbean continues to develop its athletic talent, events like the ANOCES Championship play an indispensable role in nurturing and showcasing this potential on a broader stage. The focus now shifts to future competitions, with athletes and associations likely building on the momentum and lessons learned from this significant event.
