Prime Minister Details Key Infrastructure and Digital Advancements

During a recent media roundtable, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew provided a comprehensive update on significant developments concerning the nation’s water infrastructure and its digital transformation initiatives. The monthly interaction served as a crucial platform for the public to gain detailed insights into the ongoing progress within the country.

Addressing Water Scarcity and Enhancing Supply

The Prime Minister began by addressing the pressing issue of a severe drought impacting the island. He confirmed that projections of water scarcity were known at the time his administration took office in 2022. Significant investments have been channeled into bolstering the island’s water security. A key development highlighted is the Desalination Plant in Basseterre, which is now reportedly supplying a continuous 24-hour water supply to the region.

Further efforts to improve water accessibility include ongoing drilling projects in various parts of the country, with specific mention of drilling activities in the Saddlers area to enhance local supply. The Prime Minister also detailed investments in upgrading the island’s pipeline network. These combined infrastructure enhancements have resulted in approximately 70 percent of the country now having access to regular, uninterrupted water supply. Dr. Drew emphasized this as a major improvement, noting that less than 20 percent of the population had consistent access to drinking water when the current administration assumed office.

Driving Digital Transformation with E-IDs and Modernized Passports

The discussion also focused on the nation’s digital transformation agenda, particularly the upcoming rollout of the E-id system. The Prime Minister confirmed that the national digital identification system is nearing completion and will soon be available to citizens. These E-IDs are designed to be the sole identification document required for transactions with banks and other organizations.

In line with the digitisation efforts, passport services are also undergoing modernization. Dr. Drew outlined plans for an online application process for passports, aiming to eliminate the lengthy queues currently experienced at the Church Street office.

National Digital Health System Receives International Acclaim

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to commend the St. Kitts and Nevis Robotics Association for their successful development of the National Digital Health Information System. He expressed pride in the young college students, described as masters in IT and computer systems, who were instrumental in building this critical system.

The National Digital Health Information System underwent evaluation by experts from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The organization reportedly endorsed the system, recognizing its adherence to international standards.
