Enhancing Digital Skills in St. Kitts Schools
A significant initiative aimed at bolstering digital literacy among students in St. Kitts and Nevis recently saw project officials conducting on-site evaluations at participating primary schools. Dr. Deborah Thomas, an ALTA Online Project Officer from Trinidad and Tobago, led a delegation that included key figures from the Ministry of Education. The team visited St. Paul’s Primary School and Dean Glasford Primary School, both integral to the ALTA Online Programme.
Assessing Program Effectiveness and Student Engagement
The primary objective of this visit was to gather direct feedback from the schools’ ALTA Online mentors. Project leaders sought to assess the program’s overall effectiveness and observe the level of student engagement with the digital learning tools. Discussions also focused on the practical implementation of the program within classrooms, the active participation of students, and identifying avenues for further strengthening its delivery at the school level.
Accompanying Dr. Thomas were Chief Education Officer Francil Morris, Director of the Curriculum Development Unit Amanda Serrant-Edmead, and Senior Education Officer Janelle Williams-Jacobs. Their collective presence underscored the collaborative effort between the ALTA organization and the Ministry of Education to advance learning methodologies.
The Evolution of the ALTA Online Project
The ALTA Online Project, an initiative of the Adult Tutors Association (ALTA), first commenced in 2024 with a pilot phase at Violet Primary School. Following encouraging results from this initial stage, the program was officially expanded in 2025 to encompass primary schools across St. Kitts and Nevis. This expansion marked a crucial step in providing students with access to essential digital literacy skills.
The Ministry of Education has highlighted its commitment, in partnership with ALTA, to introducing advanced and innovative learning methods to foster the development of young minds within the federation. The ALTA Online Project is designed as an online literacy initiative that utilizes interactive activities and digital lessons to improve students’ spelling, reading comprehension, and writing abilities.
ALTA’s Mission for Literacy
The Adult Literacy Tutors Association (ALTA) operates as a non-profit, volunteer-based organization. Its core mission is to enhance literacy levels among younger generations, including teenagers, children, and adults who may encounter challenges with reading and writing. The ALTA Online Project is a key component of this broader objective, leveraging technology to make learning more accessible and engaging.
