Charlestown, Nevis – A tragic incident on Monday, June 22, 2026, has resulted in the island’s first recorded road fatality of the year. Keshawn Merchant, a resident of Pond Hill, Gingerland, lost his life following a single-vehicle accident.

Accident Details Emerge

The collision occurred around 9:10 p.m. on the Island Main Road, near Old Hospital Road in Charlestown. Preliminary findings from the Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force indicate that Merchant was operating a motor scooter, identified as PB 3431, traveling from Pinney’s towards Charlestown. While navigating the roadway, the rider reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to a collision with a concrete wall situated on the mountainside.

On-Scene Response and Declaration of Death

Upon arrival at the scene, responding officers discovered Merchant unresponsive. The scooter involved sustained significant damage. Dr. Tivone Browne pronounced Keshawn Merchant deceased at approximately 9:39 p.m. after conducting an examination at the accident site.

Investigation Underway, Rumors Denied

The police department has announced that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of Merchant’s death. In response to circulating social media rumors, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force issued a statement to address allegations concerning the involvement of a police vehicle in the crash. The department firmly denied these claims, confirming that their ongoing investigation has found no evidence to support the presence of any police vehicle in the vicinity at the time of the collision. Officials clarified that any police units observed at the scene arrived solely in response to the accident.

Call for Public Cooperation

The Nevis Traffic Department reiterated that the investigation into this, the island’s first road fatality of 2026, remains active. They urged the public to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated rumors during this sensitive period. The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Keshawn Merchant during this difficult time.
