Jamaica Empress New Franchise in Women’s Caribbean Premier League

The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) has announced the addition of a new franchise, Jamaica Empress, for its 2026 season. This expansion brings the total number of participating teams to four, marking another significant step in the growth of women’s cricket across the Caribbean.

The WCPL, a burgeoning initiative within the highly popular Caribbean Premier League structure, has seen its popularity surge alongside the development of the women’s game. Jamaica Empress will now compete against established teams, including the three-time defending champions, Barbados Royals, who secured victories in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Teams and Tournament Structure

Alongside Jamaica Empress and Barbados Royals, the league features Trinbago Knight Riders, the winners of the inaugural WCPL in 2022, and Guyana Amazon Warriors. The upcoming 2026 season is set to commence with a highly anticipated match between the reigning champions, Barbados Royals, and Trinbago Knight Riders.

Jamaica Empress will make its debut in the tournament facing Guyana Amazon Warriors. Officials have expressed enthusiasm for welcoming the new franchise, noting its potential to further enhance the competitive landscape of the league.

Opportunities and Vision for Women’s Cricket

Similar to its male counterpart, the WCPL has successfully attracted a substantial viewership from across the Caribbean region. Players and organizers alike emphasize the significant opportunities the tournament provides for women in sport.

Pete Russell, Chief Executive Officer of the WCPL, shared his excitement for the upcoming season. “The WCPL is about much more than what happens on the field,” Russell stated. “We are creating a platform where women can be celebrated, communities can come together, and young girls can see clear pathways to success in sport and beyond.”

Tournament Details

The 2026 edition of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League is scheduled to take place in Barbados from September 5th to September 17th, 2026.
