Nation Launches Comprehensive Restorative Justice and Criminal Mediation Program

Basseterre, St. Kitts – The government of St. Kitts and Nevis, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has initiated a significant training program focused on Restorative Justice and Criminal Mediation. This intensive workshop commenced on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Koi Resort, with a duration of ten days dedicated to equipping participants with crucial skills for navigating conflict within the justice system.

Attorney General Garth Wilkin was present on the opening day, underscoring the government’s commitment to this initiative. The program aims to provide attendees with the knowledge, tools, and practical expertise necessary to address conflicts effectively. Officials believe this training will foster accountability, encourage dialogue, promote constructive engagement, and support rehabilitation for all parties affected by crime and conflict.

Key Objectives and Training Modules

The workshop is being facilitated by the London-based organization, Society of Mediators. A core component of the program includes an intensive four-day training session running from June 8 to June 11, 2026. During these sessions, participants are gaining a deeper understanding of restorative justice principles and criminal mediation techniques, crucial for conflict resolution.

Professionals involved in the training are emphasizing the importance of healing and personal responsibility for individuals involved in conflict. This approach is designed to empower individuals to move forward constructively.

Strengthening the Justice Framework

This Restorative Justice and Criminal Mediation Training program signifies the St. Kitts and Nevis government’s ongoing dedication to fortifying and improving the nation’s criminal justice system. Officials have stated that the objective is to cultivate a justice system that is more people-centric and responsive to the needs of its citizens.

Participants in the ten-day program are expected to experience a marked enhancement in their ability to manage conflict situations within the legal framework. The training is also geared towards fostering professional development and sharpening critical thinking skills related to justice administration. Ultimately, the program is anticipated to contribute to the establishment of a more modern, balanced, and effective national criminal justice framework.
