National Leaders Convene for Hurricane Preparedness Ahead of Atlantic Season

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew led a critical stakeholder meeting on May 30, 2026, to bolster national readiness for the approaching Trans Atlantic Hurricane Season. The gathering, held at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Conference Room, brought together members of the National Disaster Committee (NDC) and other key officials.

The primary objective of the session was to ensure the nation is comprehensively prepared for the potential impacts of the upcoming hurricane season. Participants meticulously reviewed existing preparedness measures, identified critical areas requiring enhancement, and focused on reinforcing inter-agency coordination for disaster management and emergency response.

Emphasis on Collective Responsibility and Swift Action

Prime Minister Drew underscored the vital importance of preparedness, emphasizing that the effects of any disaster are felt by all. He articulated that disaster preparedness is not the sole purview of any single organization but a collective responsibility across the entire nation. “We should be ready to respond swiftly, protect lives and property, and ensure that our communities can recover as quickly as possible,” Prime Minister Drew stated.

Subcommittee Reports and Seasonal Outlook

During the meeting, ten disaster preparedness subcommittees presented detailed updates on their respective areas of responsibility and outlined measures already implemented in anticipation of the hurricane season.

Julian Bradshaw, Deputy National Disaster Coordinator at NEMA, and Denel Dixon, Meteorological Officer, delivered key presentations. Mr. Dixon provided an overview of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season outlook, including forecasts and anticipated weather patterns. Mr. Bradshaw expressed his gratitude to all attendees for their commitment and participation in this crucial discussion, acknowledging their demanding schedules.

Government’s Commitment to National Resilience

Prime Minister Drew reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis. He affirmed that through meticulous planning, robust collaboration, and sustained preparedness efforts, the nation will strengthen its resilience. The goal is to ensure all agencies are equipped to respond effectively to any threats posed by tropical storms, hurricanes, or other hazards during the 2026 season.
