Local Sailor Achieves Historic First at North American Championship
A remarkable achievement has been made in the world of youth sailing, with 12-year-old Greyson Burrell becoming the first sailor from St. Kitts and Nevis to compete in the Optimist North American Championship. A Competitive Debut in Halifax
Burrell, a multi-talented athlete, participated in the prestigious 2026 Optimist North American Championship, held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from May 21st to May 28th. His presence at this elite event has brought pride to the nation.
The championship attracted 172 of the top Optimist sailors from across North America and the Caribbean. Following a highly competitive qualification series, participants were strategically divided into Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleets based on their initial performances. Burrell was placed in the Bronze Fleet, where he competed against 57 other sailors. He secured a commendable 20th-place finish within his fleet.
Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Experience
The week-long competition presented numerous challenges for the young sailor, including significant environmental differences, cold weather conditions, and strong ocean currents.
