The government of The Bahamas has enacted a 30-day entry ban targeting travelers who have recently visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. The measure, effective immediately, comes amid rising global concern over the Ebola virus.

Precautionary Public Health Measure

Officials confirmed that the decision was taken as a precautionary step to safeguard public health. A government statement noted that “the decision has been taken as a precautionary public measure guided by the responsibility of the government to protect residents, visitors and the wider community.” The ban will remain in effect for 30 days, subject to review by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Authorities indicated that preparations for this action had been underway for the past week, after two foreign nationals were placed in isolation. The individuals had recently arrived in The Bahamas from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the time of isolation, both men exhibited fevers, which later subsided, according to officials.

Current Status of Isolated Individuals

Health authorities have since updated the public, stating that “presently, the men do not have any symptoms consistent with Ebola Virus Disease.” The Ministry further emphasized that “the public is reminded that the risk to the public remains low and that there are no confirmed cases of Ebola in The Bahamas.”

Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville confirmed that the men remain in isolation and are in good health. “We are doing all the necessary testing and once that is complete, we will notify the media,” he said.

Understanding Ebola

Ebola is a rare but often fatal illness caused by a group of viruses known as Orthoebolaviruses. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, and weakness. In some cases, the infection can progress to vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
