The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) convened an emergency meeting on April 10, 2026, to tackle escalating internal disputes, focusing on governance issues highlighted by Trinidad and Tobago leaders concerning the reappointment of Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett.

Trinidad and Tobago Absent from Key Summit

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who spearheaded calls for transparency on Dr. Barnett’s reappointment, failed to attend the session. No delegate from Trinidad and Tobago appeared in her place, prompting the meeting to proceed without their participation.

Background on the Governance Debate

CARICOM Chairperson and Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew provided updates on the discussions. Leaders reviewed outcomes from the 50th CARICOM Heads of State meeting held February 26 in Nevis, where participants endorsed Dr. Barnett for another term.

Efforts to inform Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar of this decision prior to its public release proved unsuccessful, as she also skipped the Nevis retreat.

Push to Maintain Organizational Momentum

Dr. Drew emphasized that the absence should not hinder CARICOM’s operations, encouraging unity among members. The statement from the chairperson offered no explanation for Trinidad and Tobago’s non-attendance.
