The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) has installed a new horizontal baler at the Conaree Landfill in St. Kitts, significantly enhancing regional recycling capabilities and expanding the facility.

Completion of Phase Two Expansion

This installation completes phase two of the SWMC recycling program, which now includes cardboard alongside existing materials. Phase one, finalized in 2025, focused on aluminum cans and plastic bottles.

Official Opening Ceremony

Officials opened the expanded facility on March 18, 2026, during a ceremony at the landfill. The event aligned with Global Recycling Day.

Judith Isles, SWMC Operations Manager, highlighted waste management challenges for small islands like St. Kitts, including limited land space. She noted that increased online ordering and imports complicate proper disposal of packaging materials. Isles emphasized the baler’s efficiency in compressing large volumes of cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard into compact bales for easier storage and export preparation.

Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development and the Environment, referenced the Global Recycling Day theme, “Don’t Think Waste – Think Opportunity.” She urged St. Kitts and Nevis residents and businesses to adopt reduce, reuse, and recycle practices for plastics and other materials. Clarke also called for segregating biodegradable waste, such as fruits and food, from aluminum, plastic, and cardboard.

Collaboration with Taiwan

The SWMC recycling project results from a partnership with the Republic of China (Taiwan). Ambassador Edward Tao stated that this joint effort in the circular economy underscores the strong friendship between Taiwan and the twin-island nation.
