The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis advances its Greenhouse Village Initiative at Brotherson Estate to enhance national food security and modernize agriculture.

Project Details and Current Progress

This ambitious project features 24 state-of-the-art greenhouses, each measuring 30 feet by 100 feet. Designed for high-demand crops like sweet peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce, the structures aim to boost local production. Officials report that 22 greenhouses stand complete, with the remaining units nearing finalization.

Key Benefits for the Economy and Agriculture

Upon completion, the initiative will ramp up domestic food output, cut reliance on imports, and channel more spending into the local economy. It promises a more resilient and sustainable farming sector equipped for future challenges.

Support for Farmers

Farmers can lease the greenhouses, gaining access to climate-smart technologies, comprehensive training programs, and an optimal production setup from the Ministry of Agriculture. Training emphasizes modern greenhouse techniques and targets youth and women to broaden participation in the sector.

Public Response

Recent updates on the project’s progress have drawn positive feedback from residents. Mirelees Dolphin shared, “As recent as Saturday, I saw the project and was very impressed with it and the directions that we are heading.” Jacqueline Armony praised the effort, expressing hope that it receives proper management and avoids abandonment like some past initiatives.
