St. Kitts and Nevis observed its annual National Heroes Day on September 16, 2026, with a series of solemn wreath-laying ceremonies and tributes. The commemorations, held at National Heroes Park and other significant locations, honored the nation’s esteemed figures who played pivotal roles in its development and independence. This year’s observance also marked significant anniversaries related to the birth of national heroes Sir Joseph Nathaniel France and Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw.

National Heroes Day Commemoration Schedule

The day’s events commenced with a formal wreath-laying ceremony at National Heroes Park, beginning at 8:00 AM. The ceremony’s timing was coordinated with the arrival of the nation’s Living National Hero, Dr. Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, and his wife, Lady Simmonds. Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion and the deep respect held for those who have shaped the nation.

Leading the official commemoration was the Acting Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley. He was joined by the Governor General, Dame Marcella Liburd, and members of the federal cabinet, signifying a unified national recognition of the heroes’ contributions.

Wreath-Laying Ceremonies at National Heroes Park

The proceedings at National Heroes Park involved multiple wreath-laying segments to honor the various national heroes:

  • The Governor General, Dame Marcella Liburd, laid the inaugural wreath.
  • This was followed by the Acting Prime Minister, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, placing a wreath.
  • Family members of national heroes, including those of Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir Caleb Azaiah Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, and Dr. Sir Simeon Daniel, also paid their respects by laying wreaths at the base of the heroes’ monuments.

Following the tributes, the Living National Hero, Dr. Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, received honorable presentations. The ceremony at the park concluded with the resonant playing of the National Anthem of St. Kitts and Nevis, a moment of patriotic unity and reflection.

Anniversaries and Special Tributes

National Heroes Day 2026 also served as a moment to commemorate important historical milestones:

  • 119th Birth Anniversary: The day honored the 119th anniversary of the birth of National Hero, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France.
  • 110th Birth Anniversary: It also marked the 110th anniversary of the birth of the First National Hero, Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw.

These anniversaries highlight the enduring legacy of these foundational figures and their continued relevance to the nation’s identity and progress.

Tribute to Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence

Concluding the day’s official events, the Acting Prime Minister, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, led a special tribute to Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence. This tribute took the form of a plaque reveal ceremony held at Humming Bird Circle in Bird Rock. The ceremony recognized Sir Edmund’s significant contributions to the nation, further cementing the importance of remembering and honoring its distinguished citizens.
